UE promotes Open Source technologies
|
The European Commission worked out guidelines for members of European governments relating to migrations of computer systems to open source code platforms.

The Commission prepared documentation concerning data exchange between administrators of EU countries (IDA act – Interchange of Data between Administrators). Part of IDA consists in guidelines for countries migrating from Windows system to open source code systems (Open Source Migration Guidelines). The guidelines relate to servers as well as standard PCs and have been prepared on the basis of experiences of 9 European countries, which have already started to use Linux Operating System.
The European Commission openly acknowledges that open systems are very attractive alternative in comparison to Windows. Yet, it emphasizes the possibility of exchanging files with software working on Microsoft platform. According to the guidelines the most important migration elements are: establishing clear targets of introduced changes, ensuring technical support and accent on improving the quality of operation. The authors of the document also discourage us from starting the transformations at the administration key areas.
Such serious attitude towards Open Source systems proves that even prosperous countries of Western Europe noticed the possibility of savings, Linux system can provide. We are all looking forward to seeing these ideas being put into practice by our officials.
